SSC CHSL Typing Test

The SSC CHSL Typing Test is conducted for candidates applying for posts such as Lower Division Clerk (LDC), Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA), Sorting Assistant, Postal Assistant and Data Entry Operator (DEO). After clearing the written examination, candidates must qualify this skill test to move ahead in the final selection process.

For LDC and JSA posts, the required typing speed is 35 words per minute (WPM) in English or 30 WPM in Hindi. The test duration is 10 minutes. For DEO posts, the requirement is usually measured as 8,000 key depressions per hour. This stage is qualifying in nature, but it is mandatory. If you fail to meet the required speed or accuracy, you may not be considered further.

Typing Speed Requirement

  • English: 35 WPM
  • Hindi: 30 WPM
  • Duration: 10 Minutes
  • DEO Standard: 8,000 Key Depressions per Hour

The test checks both speed and accuracy. Typing fast with too many errors can reduce your overall performance.

Formula Used in SSC CHSL Typing Test

1. Words Per Minute (WPM) Formula

In SSC typing tests, one word is counted as five characters, including spaces and punctuation marks.

Formula:

WPM = (Total Characters Typed ÷ 5) ÷ Time in Minutes

Example:

Suppose you type 1750 characters in 10 minutes.

WPM = (1750 ÷ 5) ÷ 10
WPM = 350 ÷ 10
WPM = 35 WPM

In this case, you meet the required speed for English typing.

2. Accuracy Formula

Accuracy is calculated by comparing the number of correct characters with the total characters typed.

Formula:

Accuracy (%) = (Correct Characters ÷ Total Typed Characters) × 100

Example:

If you typed 1700 characters and 1650 were correct:

Accuracy = (1650 ÷ 1700) × 100
Accuracy = 97.05%

A high accuracy score ensures you stay safely above the qualifying standard.

How to Prepare for SSC CHSL Typing Test

  • Practice daily for at least 30–45 minutes.
  • Use a fixed 10-minute timer to match real exam conditions.
  • Focus on reducing errors before increasing speed.
  • Maintain proper sitting posture and finger placement.
  • Avoid looking at the keyboard while typing.
  • Take regular mock tests to track improvement.

Start slowly and aim for consistent accuracy. Once your accuracy crosses 95%, work on improving speed gradually.

Practical Practice Example

Imagine you attempt a full 10-minute mock test.

  • Total Characters Typed: 1800
  • Correct Characters: 1740

Step 1: Calculate WPM

WPM = (1800 ÷ 5) ÷ 10
WPM = 360 ÷ 10
WPM = 36 WPM

Step 2: Calculate Accuracy

Accuracy = (1740 ÷ 1800) × 100
Accuracy = 96.66%

With 36 WPM and more than 96% accuracy, you comfortably qualify for the English typing requirement.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Focusing only on speed and ignoring mistakes.
  • Skipping full 10-minute practice sessions.
  • Not practicing punctuation and spacing properly.
  • Using auto-correct tools during practice.
  • Taking breaks during timed sessions.

Final Words

The SSC CHSL Typing Test is manageable with regular practice. You do not need extreme speed, but you must maintain steady typing with minimal errors. Train under exam-like conditions, track your performance, and improve step by step. With disciplined preparation, clearing the typing test becomes much easier.
